Between the two walls a rod of constant cross-section S is placed, consisting of two parts of the same length l/2, having a coefficient of thermal expansion a1 and a2 and Young’s moduli E1 and E2, respectively. At temperature T1, the ends of the rod only touch the walls. With what force will the rod press on the walls, and how much will the junction of the parts of the rod shift if the rod is heated to temperature T2? Neglect the deformation of the walls.
